BRITISH COLUMBIA:
— No registration, driver
license or vehicle insurance is required.
— Operator must be 16 years
of age or older.
— Operator is required by
law to wear a bicycle helmet.
— May be operated on the road
like any bicycle, except where municipal bylaws restrict operation.

ONTARIO:
The McGuinty government is testing
a clean, healthy transportation alternative with the launch of
a 3-year
pilot program (starting from October 04, 2006) allowing the
use of e-bikes on Ontario roads. The program now permits the operation
of electric bicycles on Ontario roads without the requirements
for operator's license, registration or insurance.
ALBERTA:
— Alberta’s definition for
a similar cycle type is called a “power bicycle”.
— Power bicycle has a maximum
weight of 35 kilograms.
— No operator’s license, insurance
or registration.
— Operator must be a minimum
of 12 years old, and must have written parental consent up to
the age of 18 years.
— A Transport Canada power-assisted
bicycle weighing more than 35 kg is not considered to be a power
bicycle.

TRANSPORT CANADA:
“Power-assisted bicycle” means a vehicle that:
— has steering handlebars
and is equipped with pedals;
— is designed to travel on not more than three wheels in
contact with the ground;
— is capable of being propelled by muscular power;
— has an electric motor only, which has the following characteristics,
namely:
# it has a continuous power output rating,
measured at the shaft of the motor, of 500 W or less,
# if it is engaged by the use of muscular
power, power assistance immediately ceases when the muscular power
ceases,
# if it is engaged by the use of an accelerator
controller, power assistance immediately ceases when the brakes
are applied, and
# it is incapable of providing further assistance
when the bicycle attains a speed of 32 km/h on level ground;
— bears a label that is permanently affixed by the manufacturer
and appears in a conspicuous location stating, in both official
languages, that the vehicle is a power-assisted bicycle as defined
in this subsection.
